The Capital Gains

A financial education platform for Indian retail investors, with playbook-style courses, simulators and transparent model portfolio frameworks. I built it and run it.

Sector
Retail investing
Scope
Education, model portfolios and research

The problem

Most retail investors in India learn about markets from tips, not from understanding.

SEBI's own study found that 93% of individual traders in equity futures and options lost money over the three years to FY24. Much of what passes for financial education online is either too abstract to use or a tip service in disguise. The Capital Gains sets out to be neither: practical, specific and strictly educational.

The approach

  1. Playbooks, not lectures

Courses across four tracks, retail investing, quant and code, corporate finance and finance careers, written as playbooks that a reader can act on.
  2. Learning by doing

Interactive simulators for options and Greeks, discounted cash flow valuation, forensic red flags in company filings, and the effect of costs on compounding.
  3. Transparent portfolio frameworks

Three model portfolio frameworks that explain how to allocate and rebalance, with the reasoning shown rather than a list of stocks to buy.
  4. Education only

No tips, no stock recommendations and no broker affiliations. Every page says that the content is educational and not investment advice.

Who it serves

  • New investors

Fresh graduates and salaried professionals starting with equities and mutual funds.
  • Finance students

Valuation, quant and career tracks that go beyond the textbook.
  • Experienced investors

Business owners, HNIs and near-retirees reviewing how they allocate and what they pay in costs.

The outcome

How it is built

The platform runs on Next.js, Supabase and Sanity, hosted on Vercel. I designed and wrote it myself, which is part of the point: it is where I test, on my own product, the advice I give others about building in financial services.
